THE NATURE AND ATTRIBUTES OF GOD

A Study on Bible Doctrines

INTRODUCTION

Exodus 34:5-9; John 17:3
It is a very great revelation to have the Bible. It is greater still to have the Gift of God’s Son. And greatest of all is that the Holy Spirit does reveal God to man. The deepest knowledge on earth is that of the Most Holy God. Herein can man boastβ€”that he knows God (Jeremiah 9:23,24). The nature and attributes of God can be appreciated only as we surrender our lives to Him and come sincerely to Him by faith. He will understand the knowledge of the Most Holy, who is weaned from carnality, and reaches forth for the whole truth that God reveals (Isaiah 28:9,10).

SUB TOPICS:

  1. THE INCOMMUNICABLE ATTRIBUTES OF GOD

These are attributes of God which are peculiar to Him and not shared by man; they are divine.

    1. God is a Spirit β€” John 4:24; Acts 17:24; II Corinthians 3:17. He does not have a corruptible body like man but an incorruptible one (I Corinthians 15:40).

    2. God is Eternal β€” Psalm 90:2; Isaiah 57:15; Deuteronomy 33:27; Revelation 1:8. He has neither beginning nor end of days.

    3. God is Infinite β€” Jeremiah 23:24; Psalm 139:7-13. He is omnipresent and not limited by space or time.

    4. God is Immutable β€” James 1:17; Malachi 3:6; Hebrews 1:11,12. He never changes. Kingdoms rise and fall, but He remains the same forever.

  2. THE COMMUNICABLE ATTRIBUTES OF GOD

These are attributes that God shares, in part, with man β€” particularly the regenerated believer.

    • Power: God is omnipotent (Genesis 18:14; Matthew 19:26) and empowers His people to act in faith (John 14:12).
    • Knowledge: God is omniscient (Acts 15:18; Hebrews 4:13), yet gives believers understanding (I Corinthians 12:8).
    • Holiness: God is holy (Exodus 15:11; Isaiah 6:3) and commands His children to be holy (I Peter 1:15,16).
    • Justice: God is righteous and impartial (Deuteronomy 32:4; Acts 10:34). He expects fairness from His children (Leviticus 19:15).
    • Goodness: God is kind and patient (Romans 2:4; John 3:16) and calls us to do likewise (Matthew 5:44-48).
    • Truthfulness: God cannot lie (Numbers 23:19; Titus 1:2). Believers must speak truth in love (Ephesians 4:25).
    • Wisdom: God is infinitely wise (Romans 11:33; I Timothy 1:17) and shares wisdom generously with the humble (James 1:5).

Knowing these great attributes of God, we should:
    β€’ Worship Him with reverence.
β€’ Trust and obey Him with faith.
β€’ Seek Him in prayer and submission, for He is all-sufficient for every need (Genesis 15:1; Exodus 34:5-9).
