THE DESTINY OF SINNERS

A Study on Bible Doctrines

INTRODUCTION

Luke 16:19–31
God’s Word teaches that hell fire is a place of everlasting punishment where sinners β€” all who do not have their names written in the book of life β€” will suffer torments forever. It was prepared for the devil and his angels (Matthew 25:41) but God has decreed that the wicked and those who forget Him and reject Christ will also be cast there because of sin and neglect of His salvation (Psalm 9:17; Matthew 25:46; Luke 12:4–5).

The reality of hell is an important and recurring theme in Scripture. It is vividly depicted as a place of agonizing torment and everlasting punishment in unquenchable fire for the unconverted (Matthew 25:41; Mark 9:43–48; Luke 16:23–28). The Bible unambiguously affirms hell as the eternal abode of sinners (Psalm 9:17; Proverbs 7:24–27; Revelation 20:13–15).

SUB TOPICS:

  1. THE REALITY OF HELL

    Luke 16:19–24
Hell is a dreadful β€œrest-place” for transgressors. Jesus Christ Himself confirmed this reality repeatedly. He warned that Capernaum would be cast down into hell for its iniquities (Matthew 11:23), and declared that sinners who die unsaved would have their lot in hell (Matthew 7:15–19; 25:41–46; Luke 16:23).

The apostles also affirmed this truth (Romans 2:5–9; 2 Thessalonians 1:7–9; Hebrews 10:26–27). The word β€œhell” occurs about fifty-four times in the King James Bible β€” in Hebrew as Sheol and in Greek as Gehenna, Hades, or Tartarus β€” underscoring its undeniable reality.

  2. THE FINALITY OF HELL

    Luke 16:23–26
When a sinner dies, his soul immediately proceeds to hell, fully conscious of its pain and torment. The story of the rich man and Lazarus illustrates this eternal punishment. Hell is a place of regret and remembrance β€” where the damned recall their wasted opportunities for salvation.

False doctrines such as purgatory or annihilation are unscriptural. The future punishment of the wicked is eternal: β€œwhere their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched” (Mark 9:44–48). God’s holiness demands that sin be punished β€” either in the person of the sinner, or in the person of the sinner’s Substitute, the Lord Jesus Christ.

  3. THE URGENCY OF ACTION

    Luke 16:27–31
Action is required on the part of the sinner: repentance, faith in Christ, and obedience to the gospel are the only escape from the agony of hell (Mark 1:14–15; Luke 13:1–5).

For believers, the urgency is in soul-winning β€” praying for sinners (Romans 10:1), witnessing (Acts 9:19–20), supporting evangelism (1 Corinthians 16:15), and training others to spread the gospel (2 Timothy 2:2).

This is a great challenge, and God demands that we give it the seriousness it deserves. (Acts 1:8; Jude 23)
